Yesterday Kathryn Weekes celebrated an extraordinary milestone as colleagues, clergy, family and friends gathered for a special morning tea marking her retirement after more than 33 years of service to the Catholic Community Fund (CCF) and the Diocese of Maitland-Newcastle.

Held in the Davis Courtyard, the gathering recognised Kathryn’s dedication, compassion and the lasting relationships she built with clients and colleagues throughout her career.

Kathryn first joined the CCF in 1992 to temporarily assist during a short-staffed period, never expecting it would become a lifelong career.

“I thought I was going in for a day to help out!” Kathryn said.

Reflecting on her time at the CCF, Kathryn said the people she has met along the way have made the biggest impact on her life.

“I’ve always loved the work here and it hasn’t been a job. Serving people and talking to the customers has always been a great journey.”

Guests heard heartfelt speeches from Acting CCF Director Michelle Forbes, Fr Darryl Mackie, Fr Greg Barker and long-time colleague Cath McDonell.

In her speech, Michelle described Kathryn as “the heart and soul of the CCF”.

“Your calm, compassionate, caring, empathetic personality has been both a soothing balm to those in need and a source of celebration when called on,” Michelle said.

As she begins retirement, Kathryn is looking forward to travelling and more family time.

“I am excited for what comes next. Retirement means more travel to new places and playing with my grandchildren,” she said.

Kathryn’s kindness and dedication were warmly acknowledged by everyone throughout the celebration, and the Diocese is grateful for her years of service and wishes her every happiness for the next chapter ahead.
